Here are some examples of how Africans and African Americans have added to American fashion:
Active men’s suit
Sportswear
Zoot suit
According to the article, a new style was created, the ‘New Negro’, a self defined, urban African-American. Free Black tailors were worn to establish a relaxed, sportier men’s suit. Sportier men’s suits were made for the need for a more active lifestyle. It was going against the British fashion.
The 'New Negro' style
The article states that by the 1930's sportswear was North America’s biggest contribution to the western traditional fashion.
I think that African Americans added some good ideas to the American fashion and made the fashion better. As you look around in everyday fashion, you see how African Americans contributed to what we wear. I don’t like the fact that most companies did not give credit to African Americans. As stated in the article, very few fashion companies have publicly accredited their debt to African American people. I also feel that more people should know where those types of fashion actually came from.
What do you think about African American people not getting credit for something that they created and expanded?
What is the best way to give acknowledgment to African Americans and their contributions to fashion trends?
