U.N. says Africa’s locust outbreak needs $76 million “by, actually, now”

Summary: The main idea of the Associated Press article was that more rain will make more vegetation therefore more locust. The U.N. has said that the locust are moving to a Rift Valley where there’s more bread and grains. If there would be more rain there would be more locust because of the vegetation. Parts of East Africa need $76 million to control the outbreak, the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization). Before the outbreak happened 20 million people were suffering from lack of food. But then in 2019 East Africa got a lot of rain and it was the wettest region which made more vegetation for the locust. The locust has up to 150 million per square kilometers for one swarm. If it would continue to rain in East Africa there would be 500 times more locust than it already is.

Analysis: I feel that FAO should help East Africa as much as they can. People who live in East Africa are struggling with vegetation and rain. I feel like people from East Africa would appreciate any kind of vegetation FAO would give them.

Discussion question(s): What do you think FAO and U.N. should do about the outbreak in East Africa?
