The African cartoonists drawing themselves into the story

Summary: The article is talking about Joëlle Épée Mandengue and how her parents used to read her stories when she was angry or overwhelmed, and she was upset about why all the stories are talking about white characters, why there are no black characters in the stories? So when she grew up she decided to be a cartoonist. She made a story with her friends to make black children be happy and not thinking about why all the stories have characters.

Analysis: I feel that it’s necessary to make stories with black characters because children might think that they are not loved, and white people are better than them so they will lose confidence. I think creating cartoons with black characters will help the society accept the appearance of black people and will dispel racism.

Discussion Question(s): Do you agree/disagree with writing stories that have black characters in it, to support children that are upset about the fact that there are no stories with black characters?
